Just did some research on my own as to why a football is called a pigskin. There are contradictory explanations. (1) One is that they used to be made from pigskin. (2) The other explanation is that the "bladder" inside the football used to be a pig bladder, instead of the rubber used nowadays. Pig bladder was an offensive term so the more-politically correct "Pigskin" was used to refer to the ball.
Bottom line... who knows?
